GP2: Dramatic Feature Race at Baku

PREMA Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi took the chequered flag to win the GP2 Feature Race on Saturday in Baku.

In a race that saw only 10 of the 22 GP2 drivers finish the Feature Race, many of the drivers were eliminated in the first corner on lap one, including Alex Lynn, the test driver for the Williams F1 team.

Giovinazzi, having started in pole position, had a poor start and quickly went down the order to eighth position as the turn-one chaos started ahead of him.

The carnage was triggered by Frenchman Norman Nato, of Racing Engineering, who spun and caught out Sergio Canamasas and Pierre Gasly going into turn one.

As Nato got away, Canamasas and Gasly’s races were already over, as was the case for Nicholas Latifi, Alex Lynn, and Marvin Kirchhöfer, who all ended up in the barriers and bringing the Safety Car out for what would be the first of four Safety Car periods.

Everyone pitted under the second Safety Car period, after Trident’s Philo Paz Armand had crashed.
